Using a Multilingual AI Care Agent to Reduce Disparities in Colorectal Cancer Screening: Higher FIT Test Adoption Among Spanish-Speaking Patients

I designed a use case for Wellspan Health intended to improve colon health among Spanish-speaking populations. I conducted user interviews to determine barriers to care and designed Spanish voice agents that could call patients and address these concerns directly by offering the FIT as an alternative to a colonoscopy. The program was extremely successful – prior to the study, Spanish-speaking patients accepted colonoscopies at less than half the rate of English-speaking patients, and after, Spanish-speaking patients accepted FIT tests at more than twice the rate of English-speaking patients, leading to earlier detection of cancer, better health outcomes, and less strain on emergency services.
